Edward Peck, CEO of Asset Finance Connect
Asset Finance Connect faced a challenge that goes beyond typical conference planning: they wanted to give their NextGen talent a voice at their flagship UK conference, but the speakers were experiencing glossophobia - the fear of public speaking.
Edward Peck, CEO of Asset Finance Connect, recognised that the asset finance industry had long suffered from affinity bias, where hiring managers unconsciously recruit people who look like them. This perpetuates a lack of diversity and limits fresh perspectives. Working with the Leasing Foundation's NextGen Network, he was committed to creating genuine opportunities for young professionals, not the patronising "NextGen activities" common in the market. He wanted to give them proper support to succeed and build real expertise amongst groups currently underrepresented in the industry.
"The industry has been white, middle-aged, bald – me actually! Many of the NextGen conference activities I see in the market feel patronising. I want this to be different and to give the participants proper support to succeed. I also want to build real expertise amongst groups who are currently underrepresented and often lack the confidence to speak up – especially women in our industry."

But intention alone wouldn't solve the problem. The three NextGen speakers selected - Jamie Bridson, Ana-Maria Broscatan and Charlotte Downing - each brought valuable industry perspectives. However, they faced what 75% of the UK population experiences: public speaking anxiety.
What makes glossophobia different from general nervousness? It's not about lacking skills or preparation. It's a psychological barrier - a fear response that can be debilitating, manifesting as:
Physical symptoms (racing heart, sweating, difficulty breathing)
Cognitive overwhelm (mind going blank, racing thoughts)
Emotional distress (dread, shame, feeling exposed)
Avoidance behaviours (missing opportunities rather than face the fear)
These weren't inexperienced presenters who simply needed technique training. They were capable professionals whose fear was blocking their ability to share what they knew.
They had just 7 minutes each to address 600 senior industry professionals. The stakes were high, the time was short and the psychological barrier was real.
This is where most organisations make a critical mistake: they provide presentation skills training when what's needed is glossophobia support. Teaching someone with public speaking anxiety how to gesture or make eye contact is like teaching someone who's frozen by fear how to swim. Until you address the fear, the technique is inaccessible.

Amarkai's approach differs fundamentally from traditional public speaking training because it's built on a core understanding: glossophobia is psychological, not technical.
The coaching programme was designed around the A.C.T. framework - Amarkai's proprietary methodology for transforming speaking fear:
Accept
Acknowledge and
understand the fear
Create
Build new neural
pathways and beliefs
Transform
Embody confident communication
This framework recognises that you cannot skip straight to techniques when fear is present. You must first address the psychological barriers.

Phase 1: Individual Discovery & Mindset Transformation (3 x 60-minute 1:1 sessions)
The coaching began with ACCEPT - understanding each speaker's unique relationship with glossophobia.
Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all formula, Anthea Armar, Amarkai's founder, worked with each speaker individually to:
Understand their unique fear patterns - What specifically triggers speaking anxiety and how does it manifest for them?
Identify root causes - Understanding where the fear comes from without dwelling on it
This is where CREATE begins - building new neural pathways and beliefs by:
Reframe the speaking experience - The most transformative mindset shift: moving from self-focused to audience-focused thinking. "How can I help them?" vs "They're judging me."
This reframing doesn't eliminate nervousness, but it redirects the energy from fear to service.
As Anthea often reminds clients: "If you can help somebody think a new thought, the trajectory that thought takes them on could benefit them significantly. That's worth any temporary discomfort you might feel."
Discover authentic communication style - Rather than trying to imitate "perfect presenters," each speaker learned to leverage their natural strengths
Each speaker's natural communication strengths were identified and leveraged:
Jamie's storytelling ability and genuine passion for NextGen development
Ana-Maria's emotive, authentic communication style
Charlotte's clear advocacy and practical thinking
Now TRANSFORM begins - embodying the new mindset through structure.
Build confidence through flexible frameworks - Instead of memorising scripts, speakers learned flexible frameworks that provide security whilst maintaining the ability to respond authentically to the moment.
Develop personalised coping strategies - Each speaker received tailored techniques for managing their specific anxiety symptoms and building confidence in their unique way.
This structure acts like scaffolding - it holds you up when anxiety strikes, but allows flexibility to respond authentically to the moment.

Phase 2: Intensive Practice Clinic (90-minute group session)
This session bridged CREATE and TRANSFORM - taking new mindsets and testing them in a safe environment.
All three speakers came together for focused practice where they:
Practised in psychological safety:
The clinic provided what people with glossophobia rarely get - a space to experiment without consequences. No judgment, no careers on the line, just constructive feedback focused on specific improvements.
Experienced progressive exposure:
Rather than diving straight into the high-stakes conference, speakers built confidence incrementally:
First delivery to small, supportive group
Receiving encouraging, specific feedback
Making adjustments and trying again
Building confidence through repetition
This is how you create new neural pathways - through safe, supported practice that proves "I can do this."
Developed audience engagement techniques:
Audience engagement strategies that create connection without feeling performative
Reading and responding to audience energy
Managing impromptu questions with confidence
Built peer support:
Glossophobia can feel isolating. Realising you're not alone - that other talented, capable people share this challenge - reduces shame and builds solidarity.
The speakers supported each other, creating camaraderie that carried through to the conference day.

Phase 3: On the Day Support
This is TRANSFORM in action - embodying confident communication when it matters most.
Anthea arrived onsite on 25 November 2025 prior to their session to:
Provide grounding and perspective before they went on stage
Help manage pre-presentation nerves using the techniques practised in coaching
Remind speakers of their preparation, their value and their purpose
Be a calm, confident presence in an anxiety-inducing environment
Additionally, Anthea supported moderator Alex McWilliams throughout all three phases to ensure the session format showcased the speakers effectively and maintained an encouraging atmosphere.
Note: This programme was designed specifically for this client's timeline and needs. Whilst the core principles of the A.C.T. framework were applied, the compressed timeframe meant an intensive approach. These speakers' success demonstrates what's possible even in a short engagement, though Amarkai typically recommends longer programmes for optimal, sustainable results. Elements of what would later become the UPGRADE programme methodology were present in this work, particularly the UNBLOCK and PREPARE phases.

The results were immediate and visible - not because the speakers became different people, but because they accessed capabilities that fear had previously blocked.
Psychological Shifts
From debilitating anxiety to manageable nerves:
The speakers didn't eliminate nervousness (nor should they - some nervousness sharpens performance). But they transformed overwhelming fear into purposeful energy.
From self-focused to audience-focused:
Rather than obsessing over how they appeared, they focused on the value they were providing. This shift alone reduces anxiety by 60-70% in Amarkai's experience.
From performance to authenticity:
By embracing their natural communication styles rather than trying to imitate "perfect presenters," the speakers connected more deeply with their audiences and felt more confident.
Tangible Outcomes
The Client's Perspective
Edward Peck's testimony captured the broader impact:
Edward's testimonial:
"Public speaking for me is the most important business skill that there is... I wanted to give [NextGen speakers] proper support... Anthea took time to understand what we were trying to achieve and then worked with the speakers individually... The feedback has been phenomenal... It's been a really important programme for us and I'm really pleased we invested in it."

Ana-Maria's video testimonial: Ana-Maria shares her experience of the coaching process and its impact on her confidence and delivery.
Impact on Stage
The speakers didn't just manage their fear - they delivered genuine value to 600 professionals:
Jamie effectively promoted the Leasing Foundation Industry Insights Programme and NextGen networking events, with clear calls to action for senior leaders to nominate their young talent
Ana-Maria challenged the industry on talent retention, advocating for competing beyond cash, building career academies and leading with integrity
Charlotte addressed the critical issue of attracting and retaining young talent through industry awareness, sustainability initiatives and practical networking connections
Each brought their unique perspective and authentic voice, creating varied and engaging presentations that resonated with different segments of the audience.

Charlotte's response (post-event):
"Thank you Anthea for all of your support and guidance! Everyone did so well! So many people were saying how great we all were which is so lovely! I've really enjoyed working with you all on this, thank you all of you for your support!"
Head of Operations, Triple Point

Ana-Maria's response (post-event):
"Thank you ever so much, Anthea! and really amazing job everyone - I was so blown away by everyone, even if I thought I knew what was coming 😂 grateful to have shared the stage with you!"
Commissions Manager, Close Brothers

Jamie's response (post-event):
"Thanks Anthea, appreciate all your help in the prep! Edward was very pleased."
Director, Aston Commercial Finance

Alex's response (post-event):
"you all smashed it and have had so much good feedback so well done. Thanks for your help Anthea! 🙌🙌"

For Asset Finance Connect
Differentiation through inclusion
Replicable model created
Industry leadership demonstrated
For The Speakers
Career-long skill development
Visible, confident presence
Personal transformation
For The Industry
Challenging affinity bias
Cultural conversation sparked
Standards raised
This programme delivered tangible outcomes that extended far beyond three successful presentations.
For Asset Finance Connect:
Differentiation through genuine inclusion:
Rather than tokenistic NextGen representation, Asset Finance Connect demonstrated authentic commitment to diversity by investing in development, not just opportunity.
Replicable model created:
The success established a framework for future conferences and speaker development that can be repeated and refined.
Industry leadership demonstrated:
By addressing glossophobia properly, Asset Finance Connect positioned themselves as an organisation who genuinely develops talent.
Enhanced employer brand:
Current and prospective employees see an organisation willing to invest in overcoming challenges, not just showcasing existing strengths.
For the Speakers:
Career-long skill development:
The speakers didn't just survive one presentation - they developed capabilities they'll use throughout their careers:
Confidence to step into visibility opportunities
Techniques for managing anxiety in high-pressure situations
Ability to structure persuasive arguments
Skills for engaging diverse stakeholders
Understanding that fear is manageable, not insurmountable
Personal transformation:
Beyond professional skills, the speakers experienced personal growth in self-belief, resilience and the understanding that psychological barriers can be overcome with proper support.
As glossophobia research shows, untreated public speaking anxiety impacts career progression, earning potential and overall wellbeing. By addressing it directly, these speakers removed a barrier that could have limited them for decades.
Visibility and influence:
Jamie enhanced his profile in front of 600 industry professionals, positioning himself as a thought leader on NextGen workplace values
Ana-Maria gained confidence to deliver authentic, challenging messages that spark important industry conversations
Charlotte developed techniques to manage speaking anxiety and confidently advocate for the changes she believes the industry needs
For the Industry:
Challenging affinity bias:
By successfully showcasing diverse NextGen voices, the conference challenged the industry norm and demonstrated what becomes possible when organisations invest properly in underrepresented talent.
Concrete pathways created:
The presentations identified specific next steps for NextGen development (Industry Insights Programme sign-ups, networking connections, retention initiatives).
Cultural conversation sparked:
The quality of the presentations - and the visible confidence of the speakers - created industry-wide discussion about how to support emerging talent effectively.

The Bounce Back - Resilience
(Network Rail)

Digital Inclusion
(Westminster Council)

Beyond the Pitch
(GreenwichB2B)
Traditional public speaking training fails people with glossophobia because it addresses symptoms, not causes.
Teaching anxious speakers to make eye contact, use hand gestures or project their voice is like giving swimming lessons to someone frozen by fear of water. Until you address the psychological barrier, technique training is inaccessible.
The A.C.T. Framework: Mindset Before Method
ACCEPT → Acknowledge and understand the fear
You cannot transform what you don't understand.
The ACCEPT phase involves identifying your specific fear triggers and patterns, understanding how glossophobia manifests in your body, mind and emotions, and acknowledging the fear without being defined by it. This phase creates psychological safety. When clients feel understood rather than judged, they can be vulnerable enough to do the deep work.
CREATE → Build new neural pathways and beliefs
Fear is a learned response, which means confidence can also be learned.
The CREATE phase involves reframing the speaking experience (audience-focused vs self-focused), challenging catastrophic thinking patterns, developing new beliefs about your capabilities and building evidence through small, safe practice experiences. This is where transformation begins – not by eliminating fear, but by creating new pathways in the brain that allow confidence to coexist with and eventually outweigh anxiety.
TRANSFORM → Embody confident communication
Knowledge without application doesn't create lasting change.
The TRANSFORM phase involves practising in psychologically safe environments first, progressive exposure to speaking situations and embodying new beliefs through repeated action. This is where speakers move from "understanding" confidence to "being" confident. The new neural pathways become default patterns through consistent practice.
Why This Works When Traditional Training Doesn't
It addresses root causes:
Rather than teaching techniques that anxious speakers can't access, A.C.T. first removes the psychological barriers blocking their capabilities.
It's personalised:
Everyone's fear fingerprint is different. Cookie-cutter approaches fail because they ignore individual triggers, patterns and needs.
It builds sustainable change:
By creating new neural pathways rather than just applying behavioural Band-Aids, the transformation lasts beyond the initial coaching.
It honours the fear:
Rather than dismissing anxiety or telling people to "just get over it," A.C.T. acknowledges that glossophobia is real and valid whilst simultaneously providing a pathway through it.
It prioritises psychological safety:
Transformation requires vulnerability. Without trust and confidentiality, people can't do the deep work necessary for lasting change.
Connecting to the UPGRADE Programme
Whilst the UPGRADE programme didn't formally exist in its current form, at the time of this engagement, the coaching incorporated elements of what would become its foundation:

UNBLOCK - Breaking through mental barriers
This aligns with the ACCEPT and CREATE phases of A.C.T., identifying and dismantling the psychological barriers preventing confident communication.
PREPARE - Building internal self-assurance
This reflects the CREATE and TRANSFORM phases, developing confidence and readiness through understanding, reframing and practice.
The speakers' success demonstrates the power of addressing glossophobia through structured, psychology-informed methodology rather than jumping straight to presentation techniques.

The impact of this glossophobia-focused intervention extended far beyond three presentations.
Skill Transfer
The capabilities speakers developed apply across their professional lives:
Client interactions:
Confidence in pitches and presentations
Ability to structure persuasive arguments
Skills for managing pressure and nerves
Internal meetings:
Willingness to speak up and contribute
Confidence in challenging ideas respectfully
Ability to engage senior stakeholders
Career progression:
Visibility that leads to opportunities
Confidence to pursue leadership roles
Reduced fear of high-stakes situations
Research shows that glossophobia, when untreated, significantly limits career progression and earning potential. By addressing it early in these speakers' careers, the intervention removed a barrier that could have held them back for decades.
Organisational Impact
Talent retention: Employees who feel genuinely supported in overcoming challenges are significantly more likely to stay with their employer.
Inclusion that works: Asset Finance Connect demonstrated that diversity initiatives succeed when organisations provide development support, not just platforms.
Cultural shift: By visibly investing in glossophobia support, the organisation signals that psychological barriers are taken seriously and that development matters more than appearance.
Industry Influence
Challenging norms: The conference demonstrated to 600 senior professionals that young, diverse talent can confidently hold a stage - when given proper support.
Raising standards: Other organisations now have a model for how to genuinely develop NextGen speakers rather than just featuring them.
Sparking conversation: The success created industry dialogue about affinity bias, genuine inclusion and the importance of addressing psychological barriers to visibility.

Glossophobia is the fear of public speaking. It affects approximately 75% of the UK population to some degree and manifests as significant anxiety that can be debilitating, causing physical symptoms, cognitive overwhelm and avoidance behaviours. It's not simply "nerves" - it's a genuine psychological barrier that requires proper support.
Traditional training teaches techniques (eye contact, gestures, voice projection). This fails for people with glossophobia because fear blocks access to those techniques. Our approach addresses the psychological barrier first using the A.C.T. framework (Accept → Create → Transform). Once we remove the mental blocks, technique training becomes accessible and effective.
This varies significantly based on severity, individual circumstances and the depth of support. This case study shows meaningful transformation can happen quickly with intensive, tailored support. However, we typically recommend longer engagements for optimal, sustainable results. The UPGRADE programme provides comprehensive support across seven phases for lasting change.
No. We work with professionals across the glossophobia spectrum - from those experiencing panic attacks to those with manageable nervousness who want more confidence. The approach is always respectful, empathetic and paced appropriately for each individual.
Yes. Amarkai provides both corporate programmes (like the Asset Finance Connect case study) and individual coaching for professionals investing in their own development.
No. Whilst this programme included onsite support on conference day, the coaching and practice clinic were delivered virtually. Remote delivery can be equally effective when structured appropriately and offers flexibility for participants across the UK.
A.C.T. stands for Accept → Create → Transform. It's Amarkai's proprietary methodology for addressing glossophobia:
▪️ Accept: Acknowledge and understand the fear
▪️ Create: Build new neural pathways and beliefs
▪️ Transform: Embody confident communication
UPGRADE is Amarkai's comprehensive 7-phase system for transforming glossophobia into confidence:
▪️ Unblock - Break through mental barriers
▪️ Prepare - Build internal self-assurance
▪️ Grasp - Understand your audience deeply
▪️ Relate - Craft compelling stories
▪️ Adapt - Organise content effectively
▪️ Deliver - Command attention with presence
▪️ Evolve - Continuously grow as a speaker
Over four years of dedicated work supporting professionals with public speaking anxiety, combined with over 20 years of learning and development experience. Every programme is informed by psychology-first methodology, personalised to individual fear patterns and focused on sustainable transformation through addressing root causes.
Outcomes vary by individual and programme scope, but typical results include:
▪️ Reduced anxiety and increased confidence
▪️ Ability to deliver presentations without debilitating fear
▪️ Willingness to pursue visibility opportunities previously avoided
▪️ Improved communication across professional contexts
▪️ Enhanced wellbeing and reduced chronic stress
▪️ Career progression as speaking stops being a barrier
Absolutely. Glossophobia affects professionals at all career levels. Many executives experience public speaking anxiety despite years of experience. The approach is tailored to each individual's circumstances, seniority and specific challenges.

The transformation from anxiety to authentic confidence doesn't happen by chance. It happens through psychology-informed methodology, personalised support and genuine care for the individuals experiencing fear.
Your talented professionals have valuable perspectives worth sharing. Glossophobia shouldn't silence them.
